Canal+ has dropped Warner TV from its bid after the French pay-TV company and the channel’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery France failed to agree on renewal terms.
The channel, which was exclusively available through various Canal+ packages and its mobile app MyCanal, announced the news in a curt statement on Tuesday (January 10) that it was being broadcast by Canal+.
“We regret that Warner TV is no longer available on Canal+ and MyCanal due to the lack of agreement between the two groups. Warner TV is not closing and will soon be available again in metropolitan France.
The channel noted that it is also available to French-speaking audiences through other partnerships in many of France’s overseas territories, as well as in regions such as Belgium and Switzerland.
A breakdown in negotiations came to light when Warner Bros. Discovery France continues to prepare the ground for the launch of HBO Max in the region in 2024, including ending individual local contracts for HBO shows.
French media reported earlier this month that about 60 HBO shows were involved. game of thrones, The Sopranos And Chernobyl The Orange Cinema Series (OCS) will be removed from the bouquet on January 1.
The news that Warner TV will no longer be available on Canal+ comes just a day after the latter’s parent company Canal+ Group announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire OCS and Orange.
Other Warner channels Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Boeing, Tonami, TCM Cinema and CNN have been removed from the Canal+ offering as a result of the contract dispute.
These channels are available on other French platforms such as Orange, SFR or Molotov.tv and are less affected.
Warner’s Eurosport 360 will remain available on Canal+ as it falls under a separate deal
Warner TV attracts around 3.7 million viewers per month in France (according to figures released by audience monitor Médiamétrie/Médiamat’Thématik in early 2022), including popular shows Leverage: Redemption, the big Bang Theory, 2 break girls And the original French show visitors.
