During a recent interview with GoldDerby on YouTube, Tyler James Williams was asked if he had a favorite line from “Abbott Elementary”; one that could sum up the character of Gregory himself. In response, Williams said that Gregory’s character seemed to reflect not the phrase, but the type of food he eats.
“One thing [people] I didn’t notice that when Gregory eats something throughout the scene, it’s usually one container of super-dry pita chips. There’s nothing on them,” Williams explained. – It’s so invariably tasteless. And there’s something about it that just draws me to it.” Williams also praised the fact that Gregory is so unadventurous in his eating habits, and how this simple fact (that Gregory doesn’t like food) is objectively funny.
As frustrating as it is to hear an actor praise the character for how soft he is, it’s clear that Williams’ comments come from a deep love for Gregory himself and love for how funny such a soft character can be. It is clear that Williams adores this “unemotional” side of Gregory’s personality, and that Gregory’s fascination with tasteless pita chips is the perfect embodiment of this side of his character.
