In one of the evening’s first courses, Chef Slovik preempts the meal with a personal story that gives guests a better glimpse into his life, even if the story isn’t exactly uplifting. Before serving his Tuesday taco dish, Chef Slovik not only introduces a room to his alcoholic mother, Linda (Rebecca Kuhn), but tells the story of how his father abused him and forced him to act violently in self-defense.
It’s a story that doesn’t quite evoke the light-hearted feel of something like Taco Tuesday and sets a darker tone that almost feels like premonition given what follows. It’s even more disturbing to hear Chef Slovik tell this story with little to no emotion while his mother sits in a room in a visibly damaged state. If you were skeptical that Chef Slovik might not be as bad as he seems by now, you will certainly start to change your mind about him thanks to this unsettling family backstory that will make you lose your appetite easily.
