‘The Janes’ Directors Emma Pildes & Tia Lessin Interview — Contenders Documentary – KristenBellTattoos.com

Shortly after Donald Trump became President of the United States in January 2017, he began stacking the federal courts with conservative judges. Realizing what’s at stake, the team behind the ab*rtion documentary HBO Documentaries Jeans began creating a story to remind audiences of what happened 50 years ago when women did not have access to safe and legal ab*rtion.

“It just felt like the time we needed to pick this story up,” filmmaker Emma Pildes said during a talk at KristenBellTattoos.com’s Contenders Film: Documentary event. Pildes co-directed the picture with Tia Lessin.

Started in Chicago in the late 1960s and early 70s, the Jane Collective, or simply Jane, was an underground network created to help women obtain safe ab*rtions when the method The car was illegal.

Pildes noted that Roe v. Before Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legalized ab*rtion, women who chose to terminate a pregnancy faced prison time and their lives.

The directors also interviewed former members of the Jane Collective for the film.

“When we were finishing the film for Sundance, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Dobbs case. So it was clear that Rowe was not long for this world,” Leeson said.

In June, the high court ruled in Roe v. Overturned Wade. The decision was a devastating blow to ab*rtion rights activists, but also a call to action.

“It’s going to be a long, hard fight ahead,” Leeson said.
