New Year’s Eve means something different for everyone. For some, this is the perfect kiss at midnight (a problem in times of COVID!). For others, it’s a party with friends, family and champagne!
Luckily, there are plenty of films that capture all sorts of year-end feelings. One of these films is the first Sex in the city movie. While the 2008 hit follows Carrie’s friendship (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall), one scene emphasizes this connection more than any other.
In the film, an unmarried Carrie goes to bed early on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, Miranda is in Brooklyn all alone – her son is away on holiday with his ex Steve – and she calls and wakes up Carrie. Despite Miranda telling her not to come, Carrie puts on her heels over her silk pajamas anyway and heads to Brooklyn, arriving just in time for midnight.
“The thought of being alone on New Year’s Eve has always been treacherous to anyone.” – Filmmaker/Writer Michael Patrick Kingsaid Entertainment Weekly in 2020. “There is something about this bullseye of midnight that makes you want to test yourself. You must be in love at midnight. You must be a couple. That’s why it’s so great for Sex in the citybecause at any time we could emphasize what society says and not the reality of where people are, has always been strong.”
One detail was particularly important to the producer: the fact that Carrie, as Miranda pointed out, would not be able to hail a taxi on New Year’s Eve in New York. “For me, as a writer, it was important: Carrie on the subway – that’s how hard she tries to find a place for her friend,” King recalled.
Parker also loved the scene, telling electronic warfare“I liked it because it wasn’t words, it was just a desperate need to connect with someone who is truly important to you.”
Another typical New York movie is the one directed by Garry Marshall. New year’s night. The ensemble romantic comedy starred SJP, Josh Duhamel, Robert DeNiro, Hilary Swank and Zac Efronwho couldn’t help but admire their colleagues.
“I met [costar] Michelle [Pfeiffer] a few years ago, during Hair sprayand was crazy about her, always, from the first day, High School Music School actor revealed during a press conference in December 2011 for the film Via Collider. “I have to talk to her on the phone about this part. She said, “I think we need to take this to the next level. We really need to push it. Let’s kiss there. I’m like, “I’m in! I’m in this movie! Let me in! Sign me up! Let’s do it!’ It turned out amazing. It was a pleasure to work with her. Every second with her was amazing.”
