Robert James Gilbert Anderson, known as Bob Anderson, was a professional fencer who represented Great Britain at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki (via Washington Post). Although he didn’t take home the gold, his accomplishments were nonetheless respected enough for him to build an entire career on it after retiring from the sport. Among many other notable feats, his post fencing journey took him to Hollywood, where he became a mainstay for combat choreography.
Anderson is considered a swordsman in The Princess Bride, The Three Musketeers, Die Another Day and, yes, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. As if that wasn’t enough, he also pulled out Avatar: The Last Airbender and created different sword fighting styles for each of Middle-earth’s sentient races to make them feel more real when they fought (via Lordoftherings.net). Although this man was not famous, he had power – he literally shaped the idea of an entire generation of viewers about what makes a fight scene attractive.
