No one at the FBI believes him when he tries to alert the agency to an impending theft, so Benjamin takes it upon himself to protect the historic document by stealing it first.
Upon release, the film was not a critical success—the late Roger Ebert compared its plot to a Monty Python script—but it was a success with audiences. Although the filmmakers did not originally plan to make a sequel, the film’s box office performance contributed to the creation of National Treasure: Book of Secretswhich was released in December 2007.
Cage reprized his role as Ben along with the original cast. Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight as well as Harvey Keitel as well as franchise newcomers Helen Mirren as well as Ed Harris. Fifteen years after the premiere of the first film, a spin-off series called National Treasure: Edge of History debuted on Disney+. The show features a brand new cast of characters led by Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera), a history buff who dreams of cracking codes for the FBI.
“They really took all those great elements that we loved and cherished and took them and brought them to the present.” Catherine Zeta-Joneswho plays the villain Jess, told Screen ranting show in December 2022. “It really includes all the best and it’s a real family holiday. My niece, who is 8 years old, would watch it with my mom, and between them, with me and my kids. This is a real roller coaster. A real fun family show.”
