Steven Spielberg was inspired by his life. The Fable Men And the casting of the film was personal.
Michelle Williams plays Mitzi Fabelman, a character inspired by Spielberg’s mother. The director said Williams got the role after seeing her on the FX series. Foss/Verdon.
“She has a secret energy that came out of her when she played Gwen Worden,” the filmmaker said. The New York Times. “That went a long way in making Mitzi my first choice to play.”
Williams was enthralled by the script, saying, “When I started turning the pages of this script, I couldn’t believe it. My husband was in the room with me, and I kept saying, ‘This just keeps getting better.’ Often when you have a script, you have a great scene and you think, ‘Oh, this is going to be brilliant.’ And it was page after page after page of it, just this undisturbed, beautiful life. When I finished, I said to my husband, ‘This is an invitation. They invited him.'”
Spielberg co-wrote The Fable Men With Tony Kushner and Williams supporting him for his work.
“It took me a long time to wrap my head around the material because the words and ideas are classic Kushner through the lens of Steven Spielberg,” Williams said. “So it’s filmic and it’s theatrical, which is something I’m really interested in and since I’ve started doing theater again I’ve been deliberately focusing on that. I prepare a lot before a film. I do, and there was so much to take in. It felt like creating a mini-series because there was so much content.
