With Jeff Fowler returning to the director’s chair, the sequel is set to premiere in theaters on April 8, 2022, with Ben Schwartz, James Marsden and Jim Carrey returning as Sonic, Tom and Dr. Robotnik, respectively.
Judging by the trailer, it looks like Sonic will be fighting Robotnik again as he attempts to steal the Master Emerald.

This premise largely follows the game, sonic the hedgehog 3, in which Doctor Red tricks the echidna into battling Sonic so that he can take the Emerald for himself. Hopefully, this means we get to see the Blue Hedgehog finally Super Saiyan (sorry, I mean Super Sonic).
At the same time, Sonic appears to be in conflict with his human friend, Tom, over his desire to protect Earth as a superhero vigilante (the latter also bears the name Batman).

It also looks like Sonic and his friends will move on Indiana JonesStyle Adventure for the Temple of the Master Emerald. Plus, Sonic’s race through these ancient ruins looks directly like the level of one of his video games.
In the film, Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik and Sonic return to meet their iconic partner, Tails, and their friend/rival Knuckles.

Tales will once again be voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessy (who has voiced the character since 2014). On the other hand, Knuckles will be voiced by Idris Elba in his quest to star in every major movie franchise (seriously, dude is everywhere right now).
Plus, Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik is rocking a new look with a new mustache that looks like a pair of fists that have developed sense.

Overall, Carey looks more like her character in a video game, which shows how the filmmakers have continued to embrace the source material.
This trailer honestly gave me goosebumps when Knuckles stopped Sonic’s “spin attack,” which shows just how powerful the red echidna really is.
