The parallels between how Princess Diana and Meghan Markle were treated at the palace do feel like history repeating itself. Harry and Megan makes clear the narrative that when a woman outshines the popularity of the rest of the royal family, things start to go awry.
The Netflix documentary shows a sad photo of Diana in tears during her 1983 Australian tour with Prince Charles. She was 21 at the time, but the crowd couldn’t stop looking at her. “The prince was embarrassed that the crowd clearly preferred her to him,” wrote Sally Bedell Smith in her book. Prince Charles: passions and paradoxes of an incredible life. “For her part, Diana was upset by the disproportionate interest in her, especially when she realized that it bothered Charles. She collapsed from the strain, mourning her lady-in-waiting and secretly succumbing to bulimia.

The same problem was happening with Meghan – except it wasn’t Harry who was upset by her popularity – it was reportedly the rest of the royal family. The Duke of Suss*x understood what was happening before his eyes. “No one sees what happens behind closed doors,” he noted in the fourth episode. “I used to have my mom driving in the back seat of the car in tears and my dad saying, ‘We’re almost there. And then 30 seconds to wipe your tears, apply makeup, and the door will open… and smile. Everything is fine. And then flash, flash, flash, flash, flash.
For Megan, this led to suicidal thoughts when she believed that the only way to end the negativity was to kill herself. “All this will stop if I am not here,” she said in the documentary series. “And that was the scariest thing about it, because it was such clear thinking.” No one should have to put up with any woman being treated like this by the royal family or the public, but the criticism continues despite the Suss*xes telling their story and it’s honestly confusing. The treatment of women (and yes, including Kate Middleton) does not look good for King Charles. If he wants to modernize the monarchy, he must start from within.
