EXCLUSIVE: Apple TV+’s drama series Shantaramstarring Charlie Hunnam, will not return for the second season. Its season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale.
Based on the epic, over 900-page novel by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram was an ambitious, large-scale project, shot across two continents, affected by the pandemic.
The series shot two episodes before stopping filming in late February 2020. Due to its extensive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.
Shantaram, which hasn’t created the level of buzz that some of Apple TV+’s most popular titles have, follows Linford (Hunnam), who escapes from a maximum-security Australian prison in the 1980s. Kay reinvents herself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay, becoming entangled with him. A local mafia boss and eventually uses his gun-wielding and forgery skills to fight against invading Russian troops in Afghanistan. All the while he is falling for a mysterious and fascinating woman named Carla (Antonia Desplat) and must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it.
The series also stars Shubham Saraf, Electra Kilbey, Faisal Bazi, Luke Pasqualino, Ali Khan, Sujaya Dasgupta, Vincent Perez, David Field, Alexander Siddig, Gabriel Scharnitzky, Ilham Ehsaas, Rachel Kamath, Matthew Joseph and Shiv Pallekar.
Before being greenlit as a series on Apple TV+, Roberts’ book was the subject of several unsuccessful attempts to turn it into a film franchise led by Johnny Depp.

Andrea Barron, Nicole Clemens, Steve Golan, Justin Kurzel and Eric Warren Singer, who co-created the series with Lightfoot, also executive produced. The series was produced for Apple by Paramount Television Studios and AC Studios of Anonymous Content.
