Meghan Markle definitely didn’t google the royal family before meeting them.
Suits According to the Duke of Sussex, the alum knew so little about their then-boyfriend Prince Harry’s extended family that they mistook Prince Andrew for an aide to Queen Elizabeth II.
In his explosive Spare In his memoir, Harry, 38, writes that Markle, 41, was underprepared for her first meeting with his monarch grandmother at the Royal Lodge in October 2016.
“In a moment, Meg asked me something about the queen’s assistant. I asked who she was talking about,” he recalls in the book, which goes on sale Tuesday.
“That man with the wallet. The man who walked her to the door. It wasn’t her assistant? Who was that?” Markle replied.
Harry then explained that the man was his uncle, informing his then-girlfriend, “That was her second son. Andrew.'”
The Duke of York, who shares daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, stepped down from public duties in November 2019 due to his controversial friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew, 62, has been accused of double sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was sold by Epstein.
The Duke of York denies all of her allegations and settled his lawsuit in 2021, paying back what is reportedly hefty contributions from the Queen.
Prince Harry became the first member of the royal family to speak out against Prince Andrew after the scandal, criticizing his disgraced uncle for a “shameful” affair.
“Despite the fact that he was involved in a shameful scandal over allegations of sexual abuse of a young girl, no one even offered to remove his guard,” he wrote, discussing his and wife Meghan Markle’s battle with the palace to ensure their safety.
“People had many reasons to complain about us, sex crimes were not one of them.”
Markle, who married Harry in May 2018, previously likened meeting the late queen to a themed dinner on America’s Medieval Times chain.
“She had no idea what it was all about,” Harry explained in a 2022 Netflix documentary series about the couple. “So for her, it was a bit of a shock to the system.”
In his book, Harry also reflects on the moment his current wife met his father, King Charles III, and his stepmother, Queen Consort Camilla.
“Meg looked beautiful,” he writes, noting that he encouraged the former actress to wear her dark hair down, just the way “Pa likes it.”
He also suggested that she only wear “a little” makeup because his father “didn’t approve of women who wore a lot.”
The duo seemed much better prepared for this meeting than they were with the Queen, as they spent the evening with Charles, 74, and Camilla, 75, chatting about their “fluffy kids.”
However, Harry and Markle’s relationship with the royal family quickly soured due to the lack of support from the Duchess of Sussex’s palace as she faced media scrutiny.
The couple eventually decided to step down from their royal duties in January 2020. They officially left just over a year later.
