Prince Harry and Meghan Markle lifted the lid on the last week of their engagements before leaving the UK for good, saying the royal family is “cold” and “aloof” towards them.
The couple had a busy schedule for their latest official duties in early March 2020, culminating in their appearance alongside other members of the royal family at the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.
It was their first face-to-face meeting with his family in weeks – and as Harry revealed in the explosive new six-part Netflix documentary series, it was as awkward as it looked.
“We were nervous seeing the family because all the TV cameras and everyone who watches at home and everyone who watches in the hall … it’s like living in a soap opera where everyone else is looking at you as entertainment,” Harry said.
“I felt very distant from the rest of my family – which is interesting because a lot of how they act is about how it looks, not how it feels… and it looked cold, but it’s also felt.”
Meghan also revealed that her daring wardrobe choices for her latest royal engagements, including her bright green Emilia Wickstead gown with cape for the Commonwealth Service, were a deliberate decision after she spent so much time trying not to “ruffle the feathers” in the royal family. .
“Until that last week in the UK, I rarely wore color. I never wanted to overshadow or irritate the feathers. But I was wearing a lot of color that week, I thought, “Let’s just look like a rainbow.”
Harry added: “We weren’t with the family, it was our opportunity to go out with a bang, to be honest.”
In the fifth episode of the documentary series, Meghan shared several never-before-seen photos of her frantic farewell to the Palace staff between her service at the abbey and her flight back to Canada, where her son Archie was left behind.
“We pulled out of Westminster Abbey and that was it – I had to go to the airport, we raced to catch our flight, we cut it so close,” she said, explaining that they hurried back to Buckingham Palace for a quick change. .
“I split my hat, quickly took off this green dress, got dressed for the plane, I said goodbye … of course, it was emotional.”
Meghan added that as soon as she finally boarded the plane, the main crew member “came and knelt” next to her.
“He took off his hat and said, ‘We appreciate everything you have done for our country.’ And that was the first time I felt that someone saw a sacrifice not for my country, for this country that is not mine,” she said.
“We landed in Canada and one of our guards who was with (Harry) for so long that I just collapsed into his arms, crying. I said, “I tried so hard,” and he said, “I know you did it, I know you did it, ma’am.”
Wiping away tears, Meghan continued, “And that’s the part that’s so touching, it’s still not good enough and you still don’t fit in.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Harry made explosive new claims about his infamous crisis encounter with his family, accusing his brother of “yelling and yelling” at him when the group discussed his and Meghan’s plan to leave the front.
In early 2020, just days after he and Meghan released a sensational statement announcing their intention to pursue financial independence and live outside the UK, an emergency conference was organized between Harry, the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William. called the Sandringham Summit.
The whole world was watching, but the exact details of what happened behind closed doors were never revealed by the members of the royal family who were in the room…until now.
In a high-profile Netflix interview, Harry spoke bluntly about the incredibly tense family reunion that took place at the royal estate, which he once had “such happy memories of.”
“I came up with the same offer that we had already made publicly, but as soon as we received it, I was presented with five options: one – everything, no changes; five being, all. At the meeting, I chose the third option: half in, half out. Have your own job, but also work in support of the queen. But very quickly it became clear that this goal was non-negotiable or negotiable,” said Harry.
“It was very scary when my brother (Prince William) yelled and yelled at me and my father (then Prince Charles) said things that just weren’t true and my grandmother sat quietly and kind of took it. all inclusive. “But you have to understand that from the point of view of the family, especially her, there are ways to do things, and her ultimate mission, goal, reduction of responsibility is an institution.”
