Onyx has ordered a scripted comedy from 20th Television starring Gabourey Sidibe and a straight-to-series documentary about Black Twitter.
The pilot 1266 Follows Gabby Brixton (Sidibe), who is living with her mother and trying to become a singer/model and overnight millionaire. When she is fired, she stumbles upon the gig of a lifetime – Phone sex. What initially seems like a quick way to make money turns into a life-changing experience when she meets the women who join her chosen family and realizes how powerful her voice is. , can be profitable and wonderful.
The series is inspired by the real-life story of Sidibe, who is executive producing with Thembi Banks.Just killing in the building), Steven Canals (The pose), and Julie Bean (grew up), with Jill Kaplan to serve as a non-writing executive producer. Bank and Bean will be co-exhibitors. Banks is writing the teleplay and directing the pilot.
Documentaries in three parts. Black Twitter (working title) A Penny for Your Thoughts is from Wired Studios and Culture House. Based on a story by Jason Parham at I Wired, the doc will chart the rise, movements, voices and memes that made black Twitter an influential and dominant force in nearly every aspect of American political and cultural life.
Prentice Penny is directing the series, marking the first project with Onyx Collective under his overall deal under the banner of his company, A Penny for Your Thoughts. EPS are Penny, Chris Pollock, Alex Soler, Sarah Amos, Helen Estabrook, Agnes Chu, Andrew Whitney, Rashim Najhan, Carrie Twigg, Nicole Galowski, and Joey Jacoby, who will also serve as showrunners. Jason Parham is a producer.
