Her Minajesty! Nicki Minaj made a splash in the music industry with the beginning of her rap career – and since then she has conquered the world.
Born Onika Tanya Maraj in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Minaj moved to Queens, New York at the age of 5 with her family. She then graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in Manhattan, where she developed a love for the performing arts.
After rapping with the New York quartet The Hoodstars, Minaj set out to make a name for herself, and she did so by releasing her first mixtape. Game time is overin July 2007. She released two more tapes in April 2008 and April 2009, Bitch free as well as Pick me up Scottythe last of which attracted attention Lil Wayne. The Lollipop rapper quickly signed her to his label Young Money Entertainment and the rest was history.
As Young Money’s latest recruit, Minaj has been selected as a featured artist on songs such as Ludacris“My Chick Bad” and Kanye West“Monster” before the release of his debut album, pink fridayin November 2010. Her career took off immediately when she toured with Britney Spearsperformed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011 and won countless awards.
In April 2012, Minaj released her second album. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which mixed rap and pop and only made her an even bigger mainstream star. To promote the record, she began her first headlining tour, performed at the Grammy Awards (making her the first female solo rapper to do so), and rapped along with Madonna during the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show. In the midst of Roman Reloaded era, Minaj also ventured into the world of film and television by voicing the character in the 2012 film. The Grammy nominee has released her third album. pink imprintin December 2014 and starred in another film, Barbershop: next haircut, next year. Her fourth entry, Queenreleased in August 2018. It wasn’t until May 2020 that she got her first number 1 on Billboard Hot 100, thanks to her remix of Doja Cat“Say so.” Her second chart-topper, “Trollz” with 6ix9ineCame only a month later.
Over the years, Minaj has also made headlines about her personal life. She dated other rappers Safari Samuels, Meek Mill as well as Us before marrying your childhood friend Kenneth “Zoo” Petty in October 2019. In September of the following year, the couple had a son.

The ‘Super Bass’ artist opened up about how motherhood was ‘the biggest f*cking blessing’ while talking to Jada Pinkett Smith per Interview magazine published in October 2022.
“I’m so happy that God let me experience this,” Minaj said. “I have always loved children and have always been great with children, but in the last few years I have begun to think that this is going to be a huge shift for me because I am used to going where I want, when I want. I want to, and I knew that having a baby would change all that. But I really like it.”
Despite the rapper saying she had “very strong separation anxiety” while away from her son, Minaj returned to work by taking part in the 2022 MTV VMAs and won the coveted Video Vanguard Award with a medley of of their greatest hits.
