Born Onika Tanya Maraj in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Minaj moved to Queens, New York at the age of 5 with her family. She then graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in Manhattan, where she developed a love for the performing arts.
After rapping with the New York quartet The Hoodstars, Minaj set out to make a name for herself, and she did so by releasing her first mixtape. Game time is overin July 2007. She released two more tapes in April 2008 and April 2009, Bitch free as well as Pick me up Scottythe last of which attracted attention Lil Wayne. The Lollipop rapper quickly signed her to his label Young Money Entertainment and the rest was history.
As Young Money’s latest recruit, Minaj has been selected as a featured artist on songs such as Ludacris“My Chick Bad” and Kanye West“Monster” before the release of his debut album, pink fridayin November 2010. Her career took off immediately when she toured with Britney Spearsperformed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011 and won countless awards.
In April 2012, Minaj released her second album. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which mixed rap and pop and only made her an even bigger mainstream star. To promote the record, she began her first headlining tour, performed at the Grammy Awards (making her the first female solo rapper to do so), and rapped along with Madonna during the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show. In the midst of Roman Reloaded era, Minaj also ventured into the world of film and television by voicing the character in the 2012 film. Over the years, Minaj has also made headlines about her personal life. She dated other rappers Safari Samuels, Meek Mill as well as Us before marrying your childhood friend Kenneth “Zoo” Petty in October 2019. In September of the following year, the couple had a son.

“I’m so happy that God let me experience this,” Minaj said. “I have always loved children and have always been great with children, but in the last few years I have begun to think that this is going to be a huge shift for me because I am used to going where I want, when I want.
