Young star Jalen Hall plays Emmett Till in the film up toThe Washington Association of Black Journalists will unveil a new investigative journalism scholarship. Inaugural Special Honors Awards Gala on Saturday, December 10, 2022 in Washington, DC.

The Special Honors Awards Gala salutes the legacy of black journalists and the important role they have played throughout history in sustaining democracy, ensuring that every voice and perspective in the nation is heard.

Presented by Hall by fellow up to Cast members and filmmakers, and MGM’s Orion and United Artists Releasing, the Investigative Journalism Scholarship will benefit local college journalism students and further the organization’s efforts to increase the representation of Black journalists in the field of investigative reporting. I will help. By supporting journalists visiting the DC area, MGM, the cast and filmmakers believe it will help open the door for more journalists to come.

“I have the honor of portraying Emmett Till in the film. up tosays Hall, who learned while working on the film how important black journalists were to the civil rights movement. “I was 14 during production, the same age Emmett Till was when he was killed, and I thought about it a lot,” he says. “I thought how hard it must have been for his mom because she was close like me and my mom is close,” he says. “Mummy Till Mobley became a hero….It’s something that very few people will do.”

The WABJ Special Honors Awards were created to honor and celebrate black journalists, academics, and communications professionals in the Washington, D.C., area for their distinguished work. Award recipients are nominated by their peers and are recognized in five categories: Lifetime Achievement Award, Legacy Award, Journalist of the Year, Young Journalist of Excellence Award, and Excellence in Communication Award.

The gala is co-hosted by Eugene Daniels, Politico’s White House correspondent, MSNBC contributor, and White House Correspondents’ Association president-elect Marissa Mitchell, along with Fox5 Washington DC anchor.

Adele M. Banks – Lifetime Achievement –Adelle M. Banks is a projects editor and national reporter for the Religion News Service, covering topics such as religion and race, African American faith, and partnerships between government and religious groups.

Hamill Harris – Legacy Award – Hamel Harris is an award-winning journalist who has written hundreds of stories for various news organizations over nearly four decades. The Washington Post, Washington Informant, USA Today, and Religion Unplugged.

Tracy Wilkins – Journalist of the Year – Tracy Wilkins is the Prince George’s County Bureau Chief for NBC4 Washington. He is an Edward R. Murrow Award and multiple Emmy Award-winning reporter.

Nolan D. McCaskill – Young Journalist of the Year – Nolan D. McCaskill covers Congress for the Los Angeles Times. Before joining The Times in September 2021, he spent nearly seven years at Politico, where he covered breaking news, Congress, the Trump White House, the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, and race and policy.

Lone Walls – Excellence in Communication Awards – Lon Walls is president and CEO of Walls & Associates Inc., formerly Walls Communications. He founded the firm in 1993 after retiring as vice president and manager of the Washington, D.C., office of Hill & Flowers Public Relations, a Chicago-based public relations firm.
