special: The Motion Picture Association saw its revenue increase in 2021, driven by increased membership dues and an increase from the International Anti-Piracy Alliance.
According to the most recent tax filing with the Internal Revenue Service, the industry trade and lobbying organization posted a $340,291 loss, down from a $4.2 million shortfall a year earlier.
Revenue rose to $67.7 million, from $62.9 million a year ago.
The increase was due to a number of factors, including an increase in membership dues collected from major studio members. This rose to $54.9 million, from $51.4 million a year ago. A spokesperson said higher dues were collected from members due to lower surplus carry forward in 2021. There were also membership structures affecting income, as well as actions requested by members.
MPA also reported an increase in revenue from the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment with $5.78 million versus $4.14 million a year ago. This was due to additional liabilities, as a new member was added to ACE: Apple TV+. The coalition was launched in 2017 as a coalition to fund legal efforts to shut down infringing sites.
Spending in 2021 rose to $68 million from $67 million a year ago.
Overall salaries for MPA employees increased, but the organization also cut back on areas such as legal and lobbying expenses.
MPA Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin’s total compensation was about $3.3 million, up slightly from a year ago. That includes base compensation of $2.24 million and $1 million in bonuses and incentives.
As a 501(c)6 nonprofit, MPA and other trade associations are required to make public filings with the IRS each year, listing things like income, salaries and contributions to other organizations and political committees.
MPA’s revenue from fees collected for its movie rating service was about $4.3 million.
Tax forms also showed an increase in grants to foundations and nonprofits. The largest, at $1 million, went to Carnegie Mellon University, which is researching piracy and technology. Another organization, the Copyright Alliance, received $550,000.
Other contributions went to groups such as Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform and the limited-government group The Free State Foundation, as well as civil and voting rights organizations such as Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and Voto Latino. MPA has also contributed to both parties, with $175,000 each to the Republican and Democratic Governors Associations.
