The research, commissioned by British job hunting website Jobsite, found that young workers are often spending more than they can afford on gifts for their colleagues.

Some millennials report that they make decisions based on how much they spend on their gifts.

And they resort to spending what they can’t afford so as not to come across as “stingy”.

Twenty-six percent of young workers find themselves dipping into their savings or overdrafts to contribute to gift exchanges, the report found.

And only a quarter of employees aged 23 to 38 said they felt angry at the person who organized the ‘Secret Santa’ because their financial situation was not considered.

Another thirty-five percent of millennials reported that they would like to see the ‘Secret Santa’ tradition in the workplace banned entirely.

Dr Ashley Weinberg of the University of Salford suggests that businesses can reduce employee anxiety by introducing spending limits.

“I think when you give someone a gift, there’s a whole range of human emotions, from humiliation,” she explained. “It’s important to us how others feel about our behavior and how it comes across.”

“The spirit of giving – especially in the seasonal time of gift exchange through ‘Secret Santa’ – is something we hope can be expressed in many ways and is worth remembering. that where financial support is involved, not all partners have the same disposable income.”
