Michelle Yeoh was a winner at the Golden Globes 2023 when she became the recipient of the trophy for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Everything everywhere at once.
The star took the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and recalled her trip to Hollywood. After receiving the trophy from Ana de Armas, Yeoh said, “I’m just going to stand here and take it all in. Forty years, not going to let it go.”
“It’s been an amazing journey and an incredible fight to get here today, but I think it’s been worth it,” he said. “I remember when I first came to Hollywood, it was a dream until I got here. Because, look at that face, I came here and was told, ‘You’re a minority.’ And I’m like, ‘No, that’s not possible.’
Yeh continued, “And then someone said to me, ‘You speak English.’ I mean, forget about not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India… and then I said, ‘Yeah, the flight here was about 13 hours, so I learned.’
The actor said she turned 60 last year and noted that “as the days, years and numbers get bigger, it seems the opportunities get smaller.”
Yeho said she was about to give up after having a “really, really good run” working with Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Danny Boyle, “then the best gift came – Everything everywhere at once“
The music signaled that he had to wrap up his speech and Yeh clapped, saying, “Shut up, please. I can kill you, okay? And this is serious.”
Yeoh thanked creators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schnert for “having the courage to write about a very ordinary immigrant, an aging woman, a mother, a daughter…”
“I was given this gift of playing a woman who resonated so deeply with me and with so many people because at the end of the day, in whatever universe she was in, she was just fighting, for love. For, was fighting for his family,” he said.
Yehu concluded his acceptance speech by dedicating it to all the shoulders on whose shoulders I stand, all those who came before me, those who look like me, and all those who walk this journey with me. But moving forward.
