Little details you missed on Wednesday

Wednesday draws heavily on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven. There are obvious references, such as Nevermore Academy referring to the iconic line: “The Raven said, ‘Never.’ to “Raven” and the upcoming dance is called “Raven” and there is a statue of Po in one of the corridors.

In Episode 2, students must color their own canoes for the Poe Cup, and each must be based on a classic Poe story. Enid and Wednesday’s team refers to the “Black Cat”, while Bianca’s team refers to the “Gold Bug”. The other two teams, one of which includes Xavier and Enid’s crush Ajax (Georgie Farmer), are based on The Pit and the Pendulum and The Barrel of Amontillado. The teams sail to Crow Island, where they retrieve the flag, and then race back to the mainland.

Earlier in the episode, Rowan was thought to be dead, but resurfaces to everyone’s shock. At this point, Wednesday says Poe’s quote in voice-over: “Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see.” The quote is taken from the 1856 story “The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether” and reads slightly differently: “Believe nothing you hear, and only half of what you see.” Without Poe’s contribution, gothic storytelling would be very different today, which is why it’s great to see Burton and the team honoring him so much.
