In May 2022, a Hulu character wore the iconic Marilyn Monroe outfit. Bob Mackie dress at the Met Gala. She borrowed the clothes that Monroe famously serenaded then-President John F. Kennedy on his birthday in 1962, from Believe it or not Ripley! Museum in Orlando, Florida and said she lost 16 pounds to fit in it.
“I wore a sauna suit twice a day, ran on a treadmill, completely cut out sugar and carbohydrates, and ate only the purest vegetables and protein,” said the founder of KKW Beauty. Fashion before the gala, noting that the dress could not be changed at all due to its historical significance. “I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.”
To keep the dress in mint condition, Kardashian swapped out the original red carpet dress and turned it into a replica. However, not everyone approved of the reality TV star in the famous ensemble.
“Historical clothing should not be worn by public or private individuals,” the International Council of Museums (ICOM) said in a statement, according to Art News. “Prevention is better than cure.”
Maki himself also disagreed with this decision, saying Entertainment Weekly in May 2022: “I thought it was a big mistake. [Marilyn] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just fabulous. Nobody takes pictures like that. And it was made for her. It was designed for her. No one else should be seen wearing this dress.”
Kardashian’s moment with Marilyn wasn’t the last time she aired the cultural icon. In January 2023, the California native paid $200,000 for Princess Diana’s famous Attallah Cross at Sotheby’s Royal and Noble Sale.
Created in the 1920s by court jeweler Garrard and adorned with a Fleurée cross set with square-cut amethysts and round-cut diamonds, the gemstone was bought by Naim Attallah and loaned to Diana in 1987.
“Thanks to Attallah’s friendship with Princess Diana, he lent it to her several times over the course of several years,” Sotheby’s wrote on Instagram ahead of the sale. “It is implied that the cross was only ever worn by the princess, and after her death it was never seen again in public until now.” (Diana died at the age of 36 in a car accident in Paris in 1997.)
