Former House Speaker John Boehner choked up as he described the legacy of a partisan rival, Nancy Pelosi, who was nevertheless “very kind to me, to my family and to my team here in Washington.” “
“My girls told me: Tell the speaker how much we appreciate him,” Boehner said at a Capitol Hill event Wednesday to unveil an official portrait of Pelosi, who is stepping down from the Democratic leadership after 20 years. happening
Boehner, a Republican, succeeded Pelosi as speaker after Republicans won the House in the 2010 midterm elections. He resigned in 2015, and was replaced by Paul Ryan. Pelosi became speaker again in 2018 after the Democrats regained the majority. She announced last month that she would step down from the leadership, as Republicans prepare to regain a slim majority in the House.
“No other speaker of the House, Republican or Democrat, in modern times has wielded such authority or with such consistent results,” Boehner said at the event. “Let me just say it: you’re one tough cookie.”

Boehner said he and Pelosi “disagree ideologically on a lot of things, but we never disagreed with each other.” Boehner published a memoir last year in which he described his displeasure with the split in the House Republican caucus, particularly on the far right.
Boehner noted that he sometimes got into trouble with some of his own members for some of his friendly gestures toward Pelosi. When he took the gavel in 2011, he recalled, he leaned in to kiss Pelosi. When she pulled back, Boehner said, “I thought to myself, I can’t let her flinch, so I kind of went in and kissed her.” He said he heard about that moment months or years later.
“Leaders lead, and Madam Speaker, you led,” Boehner said.
Others attending the event included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Rep. Lucille Rybel-Allard (D-CA) and Little Lobbyists co-founder and executive director Elena Hung.
A portrait by artist Ronald Sher will hang in the speaker’s lobby, just outside the House chamber.
