The circle of friends consists of aspiring actor William (Thompson), successful architect Malcolm (White), struggling artist JB (Douglas) and competent lawyer Jude (Norton). As lust, addiction and pride threaten to tear the group apart, they find themselves forever bound by their love for Jude and the mystery of his past. But when those secrets are revealed, they finally learn that to know Jude St. Francis is to understand the limitless potential of love in the face of life.

This will be the English language premiere of the play. Van Hove had previously staged it in Dutch.

“The book is kind of a mystery, because it became a huge bestseller,” van Hove told BBC News. “It’s a bit strange because it talks about cruel things, about a traumatic experience that haunts someone for the rest of their lives.” He also told the BBC that the run time would be reduced to three hours and 40 minutes.

Sales of the novel were modest after its publication, but word of mouth pushed it to more than 2.5 million copies. Tickets for the Harold Pinter production go on sale today.
