James Gunn doesn’t want you to forget that the original Guardians of the Galaxy Groot is dead

James Gunn known for his very active social media presence, which often extends to answering questions from fans on Twitter. As a recent example, on November 28, 2022, Twitter user @Nemesis3325 tagged the director and published question: “Does the current Groot have all of the original Groot’s memories with just a Teen temperament, or is he 1000% his own Treeman?” A couple of minutes later, Gunn is right there answered“There are no memories. Son of O.G. Groot.”

This tweet is yet another in a long history of official confirmation of the same fact given by Gunn. Yahoo! Sports it was even reported in 2018 that it got to the point that the director was amused by the Internet’s seeming deliberate forgetfulness when it came to Groot’s d*ath, as a new cycle of shock and surprise seemed to start whenever he clarified that Groot and Baby Groot. Indeed, separate entities. In a recently deleted tweet, Gunn wrote: “The internet is like Groundhog Day every time I point out that the first Groot died. Little Groot has a different personality, a different body, no memories of grown Groot and adult Groot’s sacrifice actually meant anything. A new round of news and a collective sigh all over again.”

For those who didn’t know before, there may be consolation in the fact that Rocket Raccoon is now apparently raising Groot’s son – a nice idea to think about, if he ever was.
