Renowned Iranian actress Tarane Alidosti has been released from prison.
Alidosti’s mother, Nadira Hakim Elahi, announced the news through an Instagram story posted on Wednesday morning. The actor’s lawyer Zahra Manoi also shared this news on Twitter. In the post, Manoi said: “Today, my client Ms Tarane Alidosti will be released from Avon Jail after being granted bail.”
Alidosti, one of the country’s leading actresses and the title star of the 2022 Cannes competition Layla’s brotherwas arrested on December 17, 2022 and detained after expressing solidarity with anti-government protesters on Instagram where she posed without a headscarf.
The actress has been bravely speaking out in support of the freedom protests that followed the death in police custody of Mehsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman in September.
Iranian government-backed media say Alidousti has been arrested for “failing to provide evidence for some of his statements”.
Alidosti’s arrest is being widely condemned.
Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi, who directed Alidosti. The salesmantook to Instagram to demand her release, while the Cannes Film Festival also expressed its support for the actress on its social media accounts. More than 600 artists from around the world signed a petition urging the Iranian authorities to release Alidosti. The list includes important figures of world cinema including Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz, Juliette Binoche, Alfonso Cuarón and Ken Loach.
Alidosti is among a growing number of Iranian artists detained by authorities, first in a crackdown on freedom of expression and now during protests.
Other figures from Iran’s art and entertainment world arrested include filmmakers Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasolov and Mustafa Al-Ahmad, singer Sherwin Kapur and Kurdish rapper Suman Yassin from Tehran.
