During an interview in December 2022 Collider, Cameron revealed that as he turned in each Avatar script for what was intended to be a five-film franchise, the editorial notes he received from the studio became more and more sparse.
“I can’t give you the details, but all I can say is that when I turned in the script for 2, the studio gave me three pages of notes. And when I turned in the script for 3, they gave me a note page so I got better. When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, the film’s creative director, emailed me saying, “Damn it.” And I said: “Well, where are the notes?” And she said, “These are records.” Because it’s kind of crazy in a good way, right?”
Rarely does a director avoid dealing with production notes, and this is a true tribute to Cameron’s storytelling. It’s also a promising statement about the future quality of the franchise. It appears – at least with critics – that Cameron may have hit the right emotional cord; Critics on Twitter are already ecstatic to see Avatar 2: The Way of the Water. The general public will see if it puts off any swearing when it hits theaters around the world on December 16th.
