Age is just a number, according to iman. The supermodel spoke about growing up and why she embraces change.
“It’s a very Western mentality,” the Somali-born catwalk queen, 67, said of her obsession with youth in her January 2023 magazine cover story. british voguewhich was published on Wednesday, December 14th. “I’m from Africa, we celebrate aging.”
Iman continued, “A friend told me that cosmetic surgery has grown, and that’s because [people] looking at themselves in Zoom meetings… I’m like, “If it bothers you, just raise your camera.” [so it’s titled down on your face]For God’s sake!” She added, “It’s really a Western mentality. It’s never been a problem for me.”
The runway star echoed similar sentiments in a 2015 interview. slice on the eve of his 60th birthday. “I tell my younger friends: “Don’t be afraid of change. That’s when you really see what your destiny is.”
Iman began modeling in 1976 when she was spotted by photographer Peter Bird. Her big break came when she posed for Vogue that same year. She retired in 1989 but has remained a prominent figure in the fashion industry. She launched Iman Cosmetics in 1994 with the hope of diversifying the beauty world.
She spoke about the launch of her company, which offers foundation, blush and more, via Instagram in June 2020, sharing, “When I launched Iman cosmetics, we were touted as a prestige brand for women of color. And while our brand positioning and advertising showcases a wide range of skin tones, I was admittedly pleased that Iman Cosmetics was named the beauty brand that filled the gap for black women because it was deeply personal to me… I didn’t mean to. . wait for a seat at the table… I just built my own table!”
In addition, Iman is the proud mother of daughter Zulekha Haywood, 44, and Alexandria Jones, 22. She shared her youngest with husband David Bowie. The couple tied the knot in 1992 and remained married until his d*ath after battling c*ncer in 2016. “He is not my late husband,” she said in her cover story for British Vogue. “He is my husband.”
The fashion star paid tribute to the rocker in January, when he would have turned 75.
“January 8th #BowieForever,” Iman captioned a photo of the couple embracing. She also shared the snap via her Instagram story at the time. “I exist in two places, here and where you are,” she honored her late love through a second Instagram.
