“I Wholeheartedly Apologize” –

freedom Producer Joey McFarland has issued an apology after backlash for bringing the image of a slave man that inspired the film to the premiere.

“I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have offended by bringing up Peter’s photo. freedom Premier,” he posted Instagram. “My goal was to honor this remarkable man and remind the general public that his image not only brought about change in 1863, but continues to resonate and promote change today.”


The image, called “Behind the Whip,” depicts a man named Peter who escaped slavery with scars on his back after being whipped.

“After uncovering Peter’s true story with the help of dedicated historians, I have spent the last few years working with him. freedom creative team to bring his story to life so that audiences around the world can appreciate his bravery,” explained McFarland. “I hope my actions don’t distract.
The message of the film, Peter’s story and how much he affected the world.

McFarland continued, “During research and development freedomI discovered images of overlooked and historically important people whose stories also needed to be told. A portrait by Martin Delaney is on loan to the National Portrait Gallery and is currently on display. My plan has always been to donate the images to the appropriate organization in consultation with the community and I believe there is no better time to begin this process than now.

“These pictures, which were there before me, will be around long after I’m gone. They belong in the world. My goal has always been to find the right permanent home and make sure they’re accessible. And most importantly, that the people depicted in the images are remembered and their stories told with the utmost dignity and respect,” the statement concluded.
