HE is known for having one of the smoothest voices on the air and DJ Steve Wright now inspires his radio successors including Ricky Wilson.
I can report that Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky has joined Virgin Radio and will host the weekday show Drive Time, fitting into a schedule that also includes Chris Evans and Graham Norton.
In an exclusive chat about the news, Ricky, who will be broadcasting from the same offices as Kristen Bell Tattoos, joked: “We can hang out by the water cooler. I can get all the gossip about being a celebrity that no one is allowed to know.”
Speaking of Steve, who left his BBC show in September after 23 years, Ricky added: “He is one of my radio heroes.
“I changed stations as a listener to follow him. I like that he sings at the end of the tracks. When we worked on the song a few years ago, I said, “wouldn’t it be great if Steve Wright sang along on the track?” But he didn’t. He didn’t want to do it.”
However, fans of the Kaiser Chiefs, who have seven UK Top Ten albums and five Top Ten singles, may not be able to hear their hits on Ricky’s show.
Singer Ruby will begin work at Virgin on Monday, January 9th and has admitted to struggling with nerves.
Ricky said: “We may have to give amnesty to the Kaisers and I can’t play them. I’m very nervous beforehand. I watch all the other DJs come and I’m amazed at their professionalism.
“I have an hour to clean myself up and I have a huge amount of notes. I don’t use any of them, but without them I would be screwed.
“I’ve been offered a radio show before and they told me I choose songs and I think it’s brilliant. And then you do the show, but it was like listening to your own playlist.
“Now I like to listen to songs that I was snobbish about in the mid-2000s.
“I was either jealous or despised because it wasn’t as good as our music. I look back and realize how snobbish I was about music. But look, the show is going to be amazing. I will be on the radio.
“Give me a couple of months and I’ll be on the road!”
AJ on the rise and shine
A YEAR after her stint with Strictly, AJ Odudu looked as glitzy as a Glitterball trophy during a holiday night.
The TV presenter wore this metallic mini dress to a Christmas dinner at The Perfume Shop.
AJ, brand ambassador for the perfume store, looked stunning at the event in London and had good reason to smile big considering how well her career is going.
AJ hosted a series of shows this year including Married At First Sight UK: Unveiled and The Bridge: Race To A Fortune.
And earlier this month, I revealed that she would also star in the rebooted Big Brother series on ITV2.
It should start in the New Year, so she has a very busy 2023.
Drake has found a clever way to ensure he gets hugs at the end of the night by attaching plush toys to his coat.
He looked cozy in this fuzzy cream dress with added teddy bears as he attended a basketball game in his hometown of Toronto.
It was only fitting that he looked like he had some fairground prizes with him, considering he had just invested £84m to restart the artistic carnival.
The money will go toward refurbishing and relaunching Luna Luna, a 1987 museum and amusement park featuring the work of Keith Haring, David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein.
It closed due to legal issues, but Drake brings it back and sends it on a world tour.
Madge has a new caretaker
MADONNA left little to the imagination as she squeezed herself into this corset for an impromptu Instagram photoshoot.
But I’d better watch what I say about the Vogue singer, as it turns out her eldest daughter Lola Leon is fiercely defensive.
So much so that she once got p*ssed off when someone made a remark about a superstar to her.
Lola said, “I don’t disrespect people, but if you make a mistake with me, you better pray.”
Recalling one incident, she continued, “I was at a club and some stupid little bitch wanted to come over and chat. The second my mother’s name escaped her lips – I don’t approve of violence, but she… . . left.”
Lola has just started her music career under the pseudonym Lolahole and says she doesn’t want success just because of her famous mom. Speaking to The Cut website, she said: “There is an undeniable privilege that I would be foolish not to realize.
“My mom and my dad raised me a lot smarter.”
Maya aims to hack the US
There is little that Maya Jama cannot do.
In addition to a successful career in television and a sold-out cosmetic line, the Love Island presenter is preparing to take over the US.
Maya just won a legal battle to build a retail empire in the States after being blocked by lesser-known American singer Maya Jay Jenkins. Our Maya has filed a trademark application for a range of luxury beauty products, home products and jewelry.
The American Maya challenged her claims, but the team of our Maya resisted and won.
After leaving Radio 1 in 2018, the presenter, who is dating rapper Stormzy again, has become one of the UK’s most popular stars.
Not only did she work for the BBC and ITV, but she became a self-made millionaire through mega-money ad deals.
Maya said: “I try not to be too ambitious. I focus on one thing.” Looks like she has a lot more in store.
naughty girl nick
NAUGHTY BOY has worked with Beyoncé, Emeli Sande and Ed Sheeran, and this week the producer/songwriter has been sorting out new songs with Nicole Scherzinger.
In April, I shared how the former Pussycat Doll was preparing for a solo comeback and was busy recording an album.
But it’s obviously taking longer than expected because she’s still trying to perfect the tracks for her album, which will be her first since 2014’s Big Fat Lie.
She planned new music with the Dolls following the success of their 2020 single React, but their reunion tour was delayed by Covid and eventually canceled due to money, ending hopes of new tracks.
Nicole seems to have been working hard on her solo project since then.
Hope it’s worth the wait.
