Gerwig didn’t let her failed run on the show affect her career. Subsequently, she appeared in television comedies such as Portlandia and The Mindy Project and later in How I Met Your Dad in Maggie’s Plan, playing the titular Maggie. She has teamed up with numerous notable directors such as Todd Solondz in the 2016 film Wiener-Dog, Pablo Larraine in the 2016 biopic Jackie and the Wes Anderson animated film Isle of Dogs. She teamed up with director Noah Baumbach twice on 2015’s Mistress America and 2022’s White Noise. She co-wrote “White Noise” with Baumbach and worked in the writers’ room for the Adult Swim animated comedy show China, Illinois, where she also voiced the character Pony Merckx.
In 2017, Gerwig took over as director for the second time, following her 2008 debut film Nights and Weekends, which she co-starred with Joe Swanberg. She then directed a film based on her original script, Lady Bird. The film starred Brooklyn actress Saoirse Ronan, with Beanie Feldstein, Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges and Laurie Metcalf in supporting roles. The film received multiple Oscar nominationsincluding Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Supporting Actress.
