It’s been a cold, hard place at the box office not just for adult films, but for artsy titles in the awards conversation. After winning a Golden Globe for his animated film Pinocchio On Tuesday, the two-time Oscar winner was asked backstage by a reporter if he had any concerns about the state of the film.

“Everyone wants a definition when we are in the midst of transition and change and crisis at the same time,” said the Mexican Oscar winner.
“We just survived a change of delivery, the arrival of a pandemic and everyone thinks we should decide where we’re going in a year or two,” he continued.

“It will define itself in the coming decade. And the most important thing is to keep the size of the idea big.
“We’re concerned about the size of the screen,” del Toro said, but regardless of whether the films debut in theaters or streaming, “this year is full of ambition and big swings and big movies,” the director added. Said to be “varied and rich.”
