In a December 2020 interview with Howard Stern, Cyrus revealed that there were “too many conflicts” with Hemsworth, but she would “always” love him.
She cited wild California wildfires in 2018 that destroyed the house she shared with Hemsworth as the reason they rushed to make their union official.
“Our house burned down. We were kind of engaged – I don’t know if we ever really thought we were going to get married, but then we lost our home in Malibu,” she said.
“I had so much and it all disappeared, every song I ever wrote was in this house. Every photo my parents gave me, every script I had, I lost everything. And so, trying to piece it together instead of saying, “Oh, nature has done something that I couldn’t do myself; it made me let go, I ran towards the fire.
“You’re attracted to this heat and the fact that I’m a tense person and don’t want to sit with it and don’t want to go, you know, ‘What’s the point in that?’ I just clung to what was left of this house, that is, me and him.
“And I really love and loved him very, very, very much and still love him, always will.”
Cyrus even seems to be referring to the fires in Flowerswhere she sings: We were right until we were wrong / Built a house and watched it burn.
