Explanation of the ending of “Darby and the Dead”

Once Darby becomes a popular crowd, party planning is in full swing, including a DJ, a mansion on a lake, and even a pigeon. Trouble arises when Darby starts taking credit for everything and the party starts to focus on her instead of Capri. When word gets out that Darby has been nominated for Homecoming Queen, Capri becomes jealous of Darby.

When Darby gets close to Capri’s old boyfriend, James (Asher Angel), things start to get worse. Even though they are just friends, after Capri’s d*ath, things get out of hand. When they are seen holding hands in the hallway of the school, everyone mistakes the gesture for a budding romance between them. In turn, Darby’s friends scold her for stalking Capri’s man, though Darby insists she has no intention of doing so. Things come to a head when James confesses his love for Darby in front of Capri, which infuriates the teen’s ghost.

While her newfound social status may set Darby on a path to helping Capri, it quickly backfires through word of mouth and gossip. It may not be Darby’s fault at first for people giving her credit for the Capri party, but she does little to fix them. She’s too busy traveling to be clear. However, this causes a rift between her and Capri, not only keeping Capri’s spirit from going any further, but also threatening the friendship between them.
