Return! The 2023 Golden Globes are set to return to television after a hiatus in 2022 amid reports of alleged misconduct and diversity issues.
Last year, many celebrities spoke out against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which determines candidates, due to lack of diversity in the organization and organizational problems. Ultimately, NBC decided not to air the awards show in January due to the allegations, and instead hosted an untelevised private event.
In May, the HFPA announced its pledge to increase membership “with a special focus on black membership recruitment” and to create a committee of “racially and ethnically diverse members who will advise the Board and oversee critical organizational reform.”
The network had high hopes for the return of the awards show next year if the organization followed through with its plan. In September 2022, NBC reported that the Golden Globes would return in 2023 on a one-year deal.
“We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to constant change and look forward to the return of the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th anniversary in January 2023.” Francis Berwickchairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Entertainment Networks, the statement said at the time.
In December 2022, it was announced that the Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael was chosen to host the 80th ceremony.
“We are thrilled to have Jerrod Carmichael hosting the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” said HFPA President Helen Höhne at the time. “His comedic talents entertained and thrilled viewers, creating thought-provoking moments that are so important in this day and age. Jerrod is a special talent that this show requires to kick off awards season.”
Carmichael is best known for his critically acclaimed sitcom. The Carmichael Show, which ran for three seasons on NBC. The comedian also hosted the episode Saturday night life back in April.
