Each adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks film is rated

When it came time for Miley Cyrus to make her live action debut and play her first real adult role, she followed Mandy Moore’s plan with this part of the Sparks cinematic universe along with Liam Hemsworth (whom she would later marry in real life) – also, at the time, taking on the most significant role of her career.

“The Last Song” was directed by the director Julie Ann Robinson (better known for her work as a producer on shows such as The Catch, Bridgerton, and Parks and Recreation); the film is centered around the complex relationship between Ronnie (Cyrus) and her father (Greg Kinnear) when they spend time together in a southern town where she falls in love with a young stallion (Hemsworth).

The thematic glue for this is mostly the music, which helped ease the casting of Cyrus. However, the critics have not been kind, and “The Last Song” has a dismal 21% score on rotten tomatoes as well as a relatively low public rating of 65%. Interestingly, this was the first time a Sparks script was optionmeaning that the producers bought the rights to buy the script at some point in the future, rather than making the film mandatory.
