Johnson’s decision appears to be part of a longstanding problem the performer has with Shazam’s character. The 2019 film Shazam! was also ready to introduce Black Adam in a scene where the new superpowered people sat on their thrones before realizing there was a seventh seat that was empty. Johnson, however, was responsible for eliminating the scene and any references to Black Adam in Shazam! (Wrapperby using Straight).

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson himself spoke of “Shazam!”, noting that in the original draft, Black Adam was also an important part of the film. Johnson noted that the script initially served as an origin story for both characters, but that he was not prepared for such an arrangement. “When I read it, I just realized, ‘We can’t make this movie like this,'” he said. “We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.” It would be nice for Shazam if the two origin stories converged in one movie, but not for Black Adam.”

Johnson went on to say that he called management and insisted that they separate the characters, allowing “Shazam!” develop your own tone regardless of any misgivings about Black Adam.
