Instead of making the final decision himself, Elon Musk decided to leave the final decision on former President Donald Trump’s Twitter to the people.
On November 18, Musk shared a “Reinstate Former President Trump” tweet with a poll where people could vote to decide whether Trump should return to the app or not. The latest update showed that 52.3 percent of people voted to revive his Twitter account, with more than 10.5 million voters.
On November 19, Musk shared his take on the viral poll, saying, “It’s fun to watch the Trump poll on Twitter!”
It’s safe to say that everyone has their own opinion about this business move: some praise him for leaving it to the people, some scold him for even making it an option, and those who just think to themselves: “Why are you leaving this? to an Instagram poll?!
One Twitter user wrote: “Hey Elon Musk, your poll is a joke. It’s just a fake poll. . . for the “ex-fake president”. Trump is not welcome here.”
Another user talked about how they were in favor of bringing Trump back, saying, “He’s the former president of the United States, for God’s sake, how is that even a question. Trump’s ban on Twitter was NEVER supposed to happen, this is probably the most embarrassing moment in US history, aside from Biden taking office! It’s a shame”.
And another user like most, they are perplexed why the fate of the media banned by the former president will depend on the poll. They said, “Sorry, we let this happen WHY?”
Musk has said many times since he bought the app for about $44 billion that he wants “free speech” back on social media. However, more recently, he decided to change that policy a bit, tweeting: “Twitter’s new policy is freedom of speech, not freedom of reach. Negative/hate tweets will be deleted and demonetized as much as possible, so no ads or other revenue for Twitter. You won’t find a tweet unless you specifically search for it, which is no different from the rest of the internet.”
Back in early January 2021, Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s personal and professional accounts following the Jan. 6 metropolitan riots. The company has deleted the accounts due to reducing any possible further risk of violence. But now that Musk is making decisions on Twitter (mostly), many suspended accounts have been reinstated, like Kathy Griffin, Jorden Peterson, and Babylon Bee.
And, depending on the viral poll, Trump could be the newest to be reinstated. Time will tell.
