Brett Morgans Moonage Daydream That weekend brought in a cool $922,000 at the domestic box office, while an impressive array of top industry players took Saturday to reflect on the global future of the arthouse film. The real test of the feature’s core adult audience’s willingness to return to theaters — opens this fall — according to executives at the Zurich Summit, a private event surrounding the Zurich Film Festival.

David Laub, A24’s acquisitions and distribution specialist, and Cera/Affinity executive Kristen Fegeride said it’s hard to get a picture of what older audiences would do in a more normal situation. Last fall, the highly contagious new Covid-19 variant was in the news. This fall, there aren’t (or so it seems). A few new movies came out last fall. Now the flow of content is pretty steady and there have been a few standouts (Mrs. Harris is going to Paris.). Youngsters have returned to cinemas, including indie fare (led by A24’s smash hit Everything everywhere at once) if it becomes shorter. This is nice but doesn’t solve the adult demo problem.

Leaders from Neon, Sony Pictures Classics and others at the summit also discussed streaming’s impact on feature film, the challenges of financing indie projects, and finding crew while you do it. Check out’s full coverage here.
