As Modern Family came to an end in 2020 after 11 seasons on ABC, Dan Levy took on Twitter to tell how much this series means to him, not only personally, but also professionally. In fact, he singled out his friend Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell Pritchett for all 11 seasons of the show, for his work on the show and how she helped set the stage for Schitt’s Creek.
“Today my friend [Jesse Tyler] I have to say goodbye to my show. Judging by my swollen, wet face today, this is going to be ugly,” Levy wrote. “But it’s not pretty, because it means so much. What you and your show did made possible what I did. Sending you so much love and [Modern Family] team,” he concluded.
Given that Modern Family began nearly six years before Schitt’s Creek, it’s easy to see why Levy is so in awe of the series. Also, knowing that these two actors are friends and openly gay in real life, it must have been especially important to them to help so many other men in their community see these characters on their popular sitcoms.
While Schitt’s Creek and Modern Family ended 2020 for good, these two shows helped show that having a gay protagonist won’t hurt your show’s popularity one iota. On the contrary, both Levy and Ferguson have higher status than ever thanks to their stellar work on their sitcoms.
