“They brought us back for another year,” cried Andy Cohen from Times Square at the start of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage. But “this year there are some conditions, some fine print.”
Cohen and Cooper were known to drink freely during their previous stints covering the traditional Times Square countdown. Cohen became particularly notorious for his alcohol-fueled diatribes, which last year took down New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and TV personality Ryan Seacrest. As a result, CNN ruled that alcohol consumption was prohibited on that year’s live broadcast.
Alcohol consumption was banned at the top.
“We can’t drink,” Cohen said with a little jump. “But it’s okay.” Cooper asked if Cohen would be able to “make it” through the broadcast. His partner scoffed, “Do I have a pocket for food? I don’t know. It’s a long night. It’s a telethon without a disease.”
Still, the two soldiered on, and found a solution – they would still toast their audience at the top of the hour, but it would be without alcohol.
What the duo promised was a “mystery shot.” Covering their eyes, the audience watches what they are drinking and toasts with them. The first shot was “pickle juice”, causing both to swallow hard.
Cohen guessed the juice was tomato juice, which he admitted to hating. Cooper claimed he had never had a pickle.
Both hosts chased the mystery shot with juice boxes. “I prefer wine,” Cohen said.
Four more mysterious shots are pending at night.
