It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like China’s unofficial ban on Marvel is coming to an end. Disney/Marvels Black Panther: Wakanda Forever And Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantummania Both have secured release dates in China, ending a three-and-a-half-year period in which films featuring Marvel characters have not gained entry into the world’s second-largest box office market. Marvel posted the news on their Weibo account, check out the new Chinese posters for each film below.
Black Panther 2which was originally released elsewhere in November 2022, will set the table on February 7, while Ant-Man 3 It will hit Chinese theaters on the same day and date as North America on February 17. In doing so, they became the first titles since Sony/Marvel to feature a Marvel character in China Spider-Man: Far From Home in June 2019, followed by the first Disney/Marvel films. Avengers: Endgame Earlier that year.
This is a very significant turn of events that could signal a change in China’s stance on the mega-brand. We understand that this has been in the works for some time.
The Chinese box office was down an estimated 36 percent last year, reaching $4.35 billion with only a handful of Hollywood films entering. When 20th Century Studios/Disney Avatar: The Path of Water A Day and a Date was allowed release in December, the first studio film to achieve a major breakthrough in a long time. Although it got off to a slow start amid public concerns about China ending its zero-covid policy and exits, it has picked up momentum and has now grossed $220M. The film also got an extension to February 14, though it is expected to lose some steam as the Chinese New Year begins on January 22, meaning an increase in local titles.
As we’ve reported before, now that the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and the party’s 100th anniversary in 2021 are out of the way, we’ve heard that fear is less in government institutions. This was a big problem: no one wanted to make a decision or be seen to be doing something wrong at a time of geopolitical uncertainty and uncertainty within China. Marvel’s problem seems to stem from cultural and political sensitivities.
