She has jokes! Chelsea Handler opened the 28th annual Critics’ Choice Awards with a spirited opening monologue – and some scathing attacks on Nick Cannon, Prince Harry and more.
“Before we start, I just want everyone to know that we’re here to have fun and keep the good spirits going” 47-year-old Handler started on Sunday, January 15, monologue, before noting that the participants in the ceremony were “safe” from being roasted after two years of working with a therapist. “I am honored to be your host tonight after everything we have all been through together over the past few years between COVID, monkeypox, Don’t worry dear press tour. It was a lot.”
Chelsea does alums made fun of Olivia Wildea 2022 dystopian film whose cinematic achievement was overshadowed by reports of feuds between the cast and speculation that Harry Styles spit on a colleague Chris Pine at the Venice International Film Festival. Handler quickly moved from her questionable remark to praising the Sunday nominees, including Viola Davis.
“As part of Viola’s preparations for [The Woman King], she had a DNA test done to determine the best training regimen for her genetic make-up,” Handler said. “Which also, coincidentally, revealed that she was Nick Cannon’s daughter.”
After jokes about the 42-year-old masked singer Handler revealed one particular topic she was tired of hearing about – Prince Harry’s frostbitten Todger.
“Nisi Nash-Betts nominated for Dahmer. Dahmer became the third most watched show on Netflix with a total watch time of 1 billion hours,” Handler said. “Which is apparently as long as we have to listen to Prince Harry talk about his frostbitten penis. [in Spare and his recent interviews]. Enough already.”
The host also gave the cast Bear greeting explaining that the USA Network show gave a “debilitating” look at the restaurant industry – without having to “wait until James Corden“. The night host, for his part, was banned Keith McNally restaurants in October 2022 for his previous misbehavior, for which he has since apologized.
The first Chelsea Lately in October 2022, the host was announced as the host of the Critics’ Choice Awards, which honors achievements in film and television over the past year.
“We are thrilled to have Chelsea Handler join us for the 28th annual Critics’ Choice Awards,” said the CEO of the Critics’ Choice Association. Joey Berlin said in a statement at the time. “We all know and love her work as a stand-up comedian, best-selling author, podcast host and actress, and now host of the Critics’ Choice Awards! I know this is going to be the best year and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve got.”
Handler takes over hosting duties from Ty Diggswho had previously hosted the awards ceremony for the past four years, and she was more than ready to make her mark on the celebration.
“I feel light pressure, but I like hard pressure. I do my best work when I’m under pressure.” It means war the actress said Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on Friday, January 13th. “You want to challenge yourself. When you’re nervous about something, it means you care. My therapist taught me this, so now I look at nerves in a completely different light. You use this energy to fuel your performance as well as spread good cheer to everyone present. … My intention is just to have a great time and make everyone feel comfortable and welcome – like they belong here.”
As a stand-up comedian, Handler used jokes in her speech and on social media, but she wanted to bring a different point of view to the Sunday show.
“I’m not going to make fun of anyone’s children or make fun of people for having children. I think it’s forbidden,” she told the publication. “It will not piss people off and embarrass them. It’s not about making anyone feel uncomfortable, especially me, as everyone expects me to make people feel uncomfortable.”
The Critics’ Choice Awards announced the nominations last month. All Everywhere All at once and abbot elementary leads in film and television, respectively.
