Shortly after Charlize Theron won an Oscar for her role in Monster, she appeared in two very different projects.
One was retarded developmenta critically acclaimed television comedy and the other was Aeon Flux, a sci-fi film that was notoriously a flop.
It turns out that Theron decided to do retarded development because she knew Aeon Flux was a disaster.
“I knew Aeon Flux was supposed to be a f*cking failure, i knew it from the start so i did retarded development,” she said Hollywood Reporter in an extensive interview.
Theron explained what she felt she needed to do retarded development to balance what she knew would be the consequences Aeon Fluxand get rid of the reputation of a person who takes only “dark” work.
“I needed [Arrested Development]to present myself differently because people thought of me as someone who was f*cking depressed, like my mother shot my father.
“And I just f*cking loved that show.”
Theron had a recurring role in the third season retarded development, as Rita Leeds, the love interest of Jason Bateman’s character Michael Bluth. It was a flashy comedy performance, unlike the heavier dramas she was known for at the time.
Theron went on to explain what she was trying to fight for Aeon Fluxbut she was not yet able to claim certain things.
“You fight to the bitter end,” she said of the 2005 sci-fi film based on the beloved animated series. “With that, I don’t know if I have the answers to how [fix it]but I knew for sure that we had problems.
“I wasn’t a producer, and I really didn’t have the experience to say what I think Tom Cruise has been saying for the last 20 years, which is, ‘Shut this crap, get four more writers.’ on this and let’s find it out’.
“Instead, I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I just have to get through this day, I have bronchitis, but let’s keep filming.’ Now I imagine all these male actors leaving. “shut it down for six months!” and hell no one told me it was an option.”
Directed by Karin Kusama Aeon Flux was an anticipated production but ended up being one of the biggest flops of the era. It failed to recoup its budget and was dragged down by critics. It has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story takes place 400 years after 99 percent of the people were wiped out after a pandemic, and Theron plays a character who is part of a rebel organization trying to overthrow the ruling dynasty.
Peter Chang, who created the original animated series, said in 2010: “I was unhappy when I read the script four years ago. Seeing this projected larger than life in a crowded theater made me feel helpless, humiliated and sad.
“[They] claim to love the original version but do not extend that belief to their audience. No, they’ll tone it down for an audience that isn’t cool enough to appreciate a raw, clean, unadulterated source like them.”
Theron now produces many of his own projects through his company Denver and Delilah, including young adult, explosive blonde, Tully, old guard, Bomb and Netflix series mind hunter.
