Big holiday ticket prices, bonus performances and big audiences led to a strong 50% increase at the Broadway box office last week (ending Jan. 1), including productions. Funny Girl, MJ, Six, Beetlejuice And And Juliet In house record breaking shows.
20 of 33 shows added a ninth holiday weekend performance to the usual eight-performance schedule, and overall ticket prices for the New Year’s week were up 14%, with Broadway grossing an impressive $51,912,226, which Dec. 49% higher than the week ended 25. Attendance increased 31% to 311,447. The average Broadway ticket price, including premium holiday pricing figures, was $166.68, compared to $146.02 last week.
Overall, about 92% of Broadway seats were occupied for the week, compared to 84% during Christmas week.
And compared to last year’s New Year’s weekend box office haul of $26M, the industry grew a whopping 97%.
Full houses and higher prices resulted in an expected fleet of record-breaking homes. Among the shows that set new box office highs in their respective locations were:
- SixThe recently converted Lena Horne Theater sold out and grossed $1,649,206 for eight performances, setting the previous record of $1,626,478. Waitress in January 2018 at the then-named Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The average ticket price was $200, up from $160 last week.
