Ben Affleck has opened up about his marriage to Jennifer Garner, admitting that he felt “stuck” in living before he encountered alcoholism.
Ben Affleck has revealed that he felt “stuck” in his decade-long marriage to actress Jennifer Garner.
The 49-year-old Oscar winner – who rekindled his romance with pop star Jennifer Lopez earlier this year – said Howard Stern Show He turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism when he realized he was no longer happy with Garner, the mother of three of his children.
The high-profile pair were married in 2005 before announcing their separation in 2015.
“We probably would have hugged each other. I would probably still be drinking,” Affleck admitted frankly.
“Part of why I started drinking was that I felt trapped. I was like, ‘I can’t go because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ And what I did was drank a bottle of Scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which didn’t turn out to be a solution.
“Eventually we tried. We tried. We tried because we had kids, but we both realized we didn’t want this to be the model our kids looked up to about marriage.
“The truth was we took our time, we decided, we split. We had a marriage that didn’t work out. I knew she was a good mom, and I hoped she knew I was a good mother.” I’m the father. I had to calm down, and I accept that.”
Affleck checked himself into rehab for alcoholism in 2018 and has been working on his health since the addiction issues.
After getting engaged in 2002 before separating two years later, Affleck and Lopez made their relationship public in July of this year.

“It definitely crossed my mind. My responsibility towards my children is the biggest responsibility. I don’t want to do anything that is painful or devastating for them if I can help it,” he said.

“I can say it’s definitely beautiful to me,” Affleck told the publication earlier this month. “And, you know, one of the things I really value out of all the aspects of my life is that it was handled in a way that reflected that.
“It’s a great story. Great story. And, you know, maybe one day I’ll tell it. I’ll write it all down… and then I’ll set it on fire.”
