Don’t expect a kaleidoscope of colors from Warner Bros’ upcoming new teaser. Barbie the film
Instead, the bulk of the 1-minute teaser (watch it above) takes the titular doll back in history. With an atmospheric tone and earth-toned palette, this Stanley Kubrick K 2001: A Space Odyssey. Complete with a soaring orchestration of “Thus Spake Zarathustra,” the footage shows a building-sized Margot Robbie looming over a prehistoric landscape.
“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl existed, there have been dolls,” Helen Mirren chimes in on the voiceover. (The reference is to yet another hesitation, to Mirren’s character in Documentary Now!) “But dolls were forever and ever… Baby doll. Until…”
Cue the Richard Strauss, and the giant-sized Barbie, standing in for the monolith in Kubrick’s Early Man sequence. Like monkeys breaking bones. 2001, in the teaser, the little girls start breaking the “baby dolls” in slow motion. Barbie winks at the camera, and the clip closes with a few seconds of disappearing day-glo spectacle teasing, including an amusing glimpse of Ryan Gosling as Kane.
BarbieWritten and directed by Greta Gerwig, it will hit theaters on July 21, 2023. It is the first major film production under CEO Ynon Kreiz under Mattel’s current corporate tenure.
Ruby is producing the film alongside Lucky Chap’s Tom Ackerley under his Lucky Chap Entertainment Productions banner. Robbie Brenner will also produce through Mattel, as will David Heyman through Heyday Films. Lucky Chap’s Josie McNamara and Mattel’s Craze are executive producers.
On a podcast last month, Gerwig admitted to being nervous about the project.
“It was scary. I think there’s something about starting from a place where it’s, ‘Okay, anything is possible,'” Gerwig told singer-songwriter Dua Lipa on one of her podcasts. Told in the episode At your service. “It felt like starting to write it. Like, where do you start? What’s the story going to be?”
Gerwig added that she approached the film with the feeling that the “terror” she was experiencing was of a “really interesting” kind — that the film would challenge her in ways that would be fruitful. .
