Barbie Margot Robbie reveals first teaser trailer

A clear tribute to Stanley Kubrick 2001: Space Odysseydirector and co-writer Greta Gerwig stated that Barbie is not going to be what you expected.

The trailer is inspired by the opening scene of Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece, but monkeys playing with bones are replaced with little girls playing with dolls.

Voice-over – Helen Mirren! – says: “From time immemorial, since the first little girl appeared, there have been dolls, but dolls have always and always been dolls, until …”

The shot cuts to the appearance of a shadowy mass, backlit by the sun. Not quite a monolith, but just as iconic in other ways, proving to be a Barbie standing tall and with a distinct Robbie smile and wink.

After the credits, there are scenes that reveal Barbiea vibrant visual palette – pink, pink and more pink – while there are glimpses of Ryan Gosling, sex education as well as Doctor Who star Nkuti Gatwa, UnreliableIssa Ray, shang chiSim Liu and Peaky BlindersKingsley Ben Adir.

Barbie is one of the most anticipated films of 2023, boasting not only an all-star cast but also a cinematic dream team made up of real-life partners and creative collaborators Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

Gerwig and Baumbach signed on in 2019 to write the script, and in 2021 Gerwig was confirmed to direct.

Little is known about its plot, only that it will include various versions of Barbie and the Kens.

The cast also includes Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Emma McKee, Emerald Fennell and Michael Cera.

When the production was filmed in California earlier this year, the blindingly colorful outfits took the internet by storm. Style watchers and tastemakers predicted that Barbicor would become a trend by the middle of the year when the film was released.

Robbie told Jimmy Fallon about evening show that she was “killed” by the audience’s reaction to the photo from the set.

“By the way, I can’t tell you how upset we were,” Robbie said. “We look laughing and cheerful, but we are dying inside. Dying. I thought, “This is the most humiliating moment of my life.”

Robbie said that having to shoot outside scenes in Los Angeles always drew attention – they didn’t quite harmonize – but she was surprised at the level they reached.

“I knew we had exteriors to film in Los Angeles. I knew that as soon as you took care of the exterior, you would be slammed. There will probably be a small crowd of people who will pay attention to this, because, you know, we stand out a little in these outfits.

“So I knew there would be some attention and maybe some photos would end up there, but not in the way that happened.

“It was like insanity. It was like hundreds of people were watching all the time.”

Gerwig is best known as a film director. Lady Bird as well as Small woman. In 2017, she became only the fifth woman to be nominated for an Oscar for directing. Lady Birdand was also nominated twice in the scripting categories.

Baumbach did Squid and whale, Marriage history, Meyerowitz stories as well as Francis Ha. His last film White noisewhich stars Gerwig and Adam Driver, is currently in theaters and later this month on Netflix.

Barbie will hit theaters on July 20, 2023.
