‘Avatar: The Path of Water’ box office falls short of expectations

If any other film had grossed nearly $435 million in its opening weekend, everyone would have been ecstatic.

But since Avatar The sequel was so hyped, and since it needs such a huge box office to be considered a success, US$434 million is actually a disadvantage. Imagine it.

The three-hour film opened immediately after projections that ranged from US$450 million to US$550 million.

In Australia, Avatar: Path of Water earned $16.59 million since Wednesday night previews. This is the second largest local discovery this year after Thor: Love and Thunder. Fifty-two percent of the tickets sold in Australia were for 3D sessions.

Avatar: Path of Water earned US$134 million in the US and Canada and another US$304 million in international markets.

Cameron previously said Avatar The sequel has to be the third or fourth highest grossing film of all time to break even, which means it has to outperform Star Wars: The Force Awakenswhich is at $2.06 billion before it starts to turn a profit.

Despite the fact that the first weekend turned out to be lower than predicted, there are expectations. Avatar: Path of Water will have endurance.

Original Avatar The film is currently the highest-grossing film of all time with US$2.91 billion in box office receipts. When it opened in 2009, it grossed US$77 million in the US and Canada, which the sequel had already beaten, eventually growing to a regional total of US$760 million.

Avatar: Path of Water A strong box office position is expected to continue during the holiday break in Australia and overseas, given the relative lack of competition in the blockbuster market.

movie marvel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opened over a month ago, while Boxing Day and summer editions are more mature dramas and award season contenders such as Fabelmans and Banshee of Inisherina or family fun Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.

Industry relies on Avatar: Path of Water to lure reluctant moviegoers back to theaters after disruptions from the pandemic and an accelerated transition to home viewing on streaming services.

Cinemas are also battling shortened “theatre windows” that dictate how long it takes between when a movie opens in theaters and then becomes available for home viewing. Shorter “theater windows” are thought to discourage audiences from going to theaters if they know they can watch it at home without waiting too long.

Two years of self-isolation plummeted at the box office. It stood at $42.5 billion in 2019 before dropping to $12.4 billion in 2020 and $21.4 billion in 2021.

There are green shoots in 2022. Top Shooter: Maverick exported 1.488 billion US dollars, while Jurassic World: Dominion amounted to $1 billion.

China, which ranked No. 1 in the U.S. as the go-to movie market in 2020, saw box office receipts drop in 2022 after ongoing lockdowns as other parts of the world avoided extreme measures.

Avatar: Path of Water opened in China at $57.1 million, below expectations, according to Diversity.

The sequel returns to the planet Pandora, where blue Na’vi aliens, including protagonists Jake Sully and Neytiri, face a new threat from the same people who previously tried to devastate the planet.

Sally and Neytiri, now parents, flee the forest and seek refuge with the clans that live in the water.

Cameron has three more sequels planned, but whether they come to fruition will depend on how Avatar: Path of Water performs.
