Avatar: The Way of the Water grossed over $66 million at the box office in its third weekend (via Diversity). The James Cameron sequel accomplished the rare feat of increasing sales by 4% over its second weekend. The sequel continues to hold up well, mimicking the same legs as the original. The film grossed $86.3 million over four days including New Year’s. Domestically, The Way of the Water grossed over $440 million at the box office.
In comparison, the original Avatar made $352 million in its third weekend (January 1, 2010). Numbers. However, the franchise’s first film grossed more domestically, grossing $68 million in its third week. Regardless, the sequel continues to perform well. The film grossed $1.4 billion worldwide. The film will overtake Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick in a matter of days, which grossed $1.48 billion, making The Way of the Water the highest-grossing film of 2022. It remains to be seen how far the Avatar sequel will go. I’ll go.
With a relatively empty January (apart from M3GAN), Waterway should continue its impressive trajectory. Will James Cameron’s latest film make another $2 billion? Time will tell.
