Annie Potts never saw The Big Bang Theory until she landed a role in Young Sheldon.

Smashing Interviews magazine caught up with Annie Potts in late September 2022, asking the legendary actress about her Hollywood journey. This inevitably led to a discussion of “Young Sheldon” when Potts admitted that she hadn’t seen The Big Bang Theory before she landed the role of Meemaw. “I was not an observer of the Big Bang, sort of like not my generation. When I started this show, I watched it a few times, just to see if there was anything I needed to know,” she explained, emphasizing that her inexperience with the sitcom worked in her favor. She used it to give Meemaw a completely different look.

Not only did Annie Potts go out of her way to separate Meemaw from her performance of June Squibb from The Big Bang Theory, but for each episode, she worked hard on her character’s appearance. Potts spoke to Glamor a bit about Meemaw’s role, noting that she doesn’t need someone to do her makeup for her. She revealed, “I do my makeup too, so the whole thing takes 30 minutes from start to finish… I use blue eyeshadow a lot because it’s still the gold standard in Texas.” Potts also mentioned that Meemaw’s wig is not as heavy as it might seem.

Even though she missed The Big Bang Theory, it’s hard to deny that Annie Potts knocked the role of Meemaw out of the park in Young Sheldon.
